When should an extrusion line add a melt pump?
A melt pump is commonly evaluated when the line needs more stable die pressure, tighter output control, reduced dependence on the extruder for pressure generation, or a better way to handle a demanding downstream pressure requirement. It cannot correct every melting, feeding, venting, degradation or die problem, so inlet conditions and the complete process must be reviewed.
Can MAAG replace a competitive melt pump or screen changer?
Yes, a competitive installed unit can be evaluated for replacement. The project is not treated as a brand-for-brand or flange-only swap. Document the existing equipment, duty, centerline, length, interfaces, drive, heating, controls, pressure instruments, structure, access and retained downstream equipment.
Can a melt pump increase extrusion output?
Potentially, when the extruder is spending useful capacity generating downstream pressure and the melt remains suitable at the pump inlet. The result depends on screw and extruder capability, polymer, viscosity, temperature, inlet pressure, venting, feed stability, die demand, filtration and product-quality limits. Output improvement must be estimated for the actual line.
Can a melt pump reduce thickness or dimensional variation?
More stable melt delivery can reduce pressure-driven output variation that appears as film, sheet, pipe, tube or profile dimensional drift. It does not correct every source of variation. Material consistency, temperature, die behavior, cooling, haul-off or line speed and downstream measurement/control should be evaluated alongside the pump.
What information is required to size a melt-pump retrofit?
Provide the polymer and formulation, normal and worst viscosity and temperature, minimum/normal/maximum throughput, pump-inlet pressure, required discharge pressure, contamination, current equipment, available space, flanges, centerline, drive and controls. Normal and worst-approved conditions are more useful than a single nominal rate.
Why are our screen changes becoming more frequent?
Shorter screen life may result from greater contamination load, different contaminants, more reclaim, polymer degradation, an overly fine filtration target, insufficient active area, temperature or viscosity changes, increased throughput, startup practice or equipment condition. Trend differential pressure and document the material and operating cycle before assigning the cause to the screen changer.
Can a manual or discontinuous screen changer be upgraded to continuous filtration?
It can be evaluated as a line retrofit. The review must establish polymer, throughput, contamination, screen target, pressure, temperature, available length, centerline, heating, hydraulics, controls, structure, access, downtime tolerance and interfaces. A continuous screen changer or automated filter is selected from the complete duty—not solely from the current flange size.
Can controls be upgraded without replacing the pump or screen changer?
Potentially. Inventory the existing PLC/HMI, drives, heaters, sensors, hydraulics, I/O, interlocks, networks, source files, licenses and plant standards. The operating narrative must preserve pump and filtration protection, startup/shutdown behavior and pressure/temperature limits. Retained-equipment compatibility and third-party responsibilities require written review.
Can we retain the existing die, filter, drive or controls?
Potentially. Each retained layer must be checked for condition, capacity, pressure and temperature rating, dimensions, alignment, heating, controls interfaces, safety functions, documentation and lifecycle support. The retrofit scope should explicitly list retained equipment and who confirms its condition.
How much shutdown time does a retrofit require?
It depends on removal, adapters, field dimensions, base or cart, rigging, electrical and hydraulic work, controls integration, heat-up, cold checkout, material startup and acceptance testing. Early field verification and prefabrication can reduce risk, but the actual outage must be planned around the specific site and written responsibilities.
Who handles MAAG parts, inspection, repair and maintenance for existing equipment?
MAAG owns technical service, original-parts confirmation, inspection, repair, maintenance and service response. Gauge Advisor can collect the equipment identity and route the request to MAAG, but Gauge Advisor is not MAAG customer service, a repair shop, a maintenance provider or a field technician. Availability and scope are confirmed by MAAG.
Who installs and commissions the retrofit?
The written quotation must identify who owns field dimensions, removal, rigging, mechanical and electrical installation, utilities, controls interfaces, checkout, hot commissioning, material, operators, training and acceptance testing. None of those responsibilities should be assumed solely from the equipment quotation.
