BenchLinc: Automated ID/OD, Wall Thickness, and Ovality Measurement for High-Performance Tubing

Updated March 10, 2026

For manufacturers working with tight-tolerance tubing like medical devices, aerospace systems, or automotive fuel and fluid lines, measurement accuracy is critical. Dimensional variations compromise product performance, regulatory compliance, and safety. That’s why quality engineers across these industries rely on the BenchLinc ID/OD/Wall Measurement System from LaserLinc. The system offers fast and accurate measurements of tubing samples.

The system provides fast, high-accuracy tube measurements in just seconds. Its automated 360° tube rotation and built-in reporting tools greatly reduce inspection time compared to manual calipers or microscopes. They also remove operator variability from the process.

Note: for a full overview of systems used for tubing inspection and dimensional verification, see our medical device measurement and inspection solutions.

All-in-One Solution for Critical Tube Measurements

The BenchLinc system is designed for comprehensive dimensional inspection in a single device using laser micrometer technology:

  • Inner Diameter (ID)
  • Outer Diameter (OD)
  • Wall Thickness
  • Ovality
  • Tolerance Verification
  • SPC & Data Logging

Its easy to use 12” HD touchscreen tablet interface (or desktop Windows PC) provides a smooth operator experience, making setup and data retrieval efficient and frustration-free.

Step-by-Step: Automating Tubing Inspection with BenchLinc

The process for taking measurements is very simple:

  1. Prepare Sample:
Cut the tubing sample to an approximate length of 1–5 inches (2.5–12.7 cm) using a clean cutting tool.*
  2. Position Sample:
Gently place the tube onto the coated steel mandrel of the BenchLinc system. Lower the motor bands and adjust force on part.
  3. Select Recipe:
Load the preconfigured part-specific recipe from the BenchLinc interface to apply the correct measurement parameters. Recipes ensure R&R (Repeatability and Reproducibility) across different shifts and operators.
  4. Begin Measurement:
Press the “Rotate and Measure” button on the touchscreen to automatically rotate the sample 360 degrees and collect precise dimensional data.
  5. Review & Export:
Instantly generate statistics (ID, OD, wall thickness, ovality) and export results directly into a spreadsheet or quality system.

*Note: For full length part measurements, consider the BenchLincUT or the Metron scanning micrometer.

Multiple Measurement Modes Tailored to Your Workflow

The system offers three distinct measurement modes, each optimized for specific quality processes:

  1. Generic Part Measurement
    • Ideal for one-off checks or validation of various part sizes.
    • Real-time OD and Wall trend charts.
    • Use with or without a recipe.
  2. Batch Measurement
    • Designed for multiple part testing with statistical batch analysis.
    • Includes pass/fail evaluation based on predefined specs.
    • Creates detailed batch reports, storing both individual and group data.
  3. Inline Measurement Adjustment (Closed-Loop process control)
    • Bridges offline measurements with in-process extrusion systems.
    • Automatically calibrates inline OD and Wall measurements.
    • Supports OPC UA communication for integration with inline UltraGauge+ ultrasonic system and triple axis micrometer on the extrusion line.

These modes offer full flexibility, letting users adapt their inspection strategy to the needs of production, troubleshooting, or calibration.

Engineered for Consistency and Accuracy

Every detail of the BenchLinc design is optimized for precision and repeatability:

  • Integrated load cell ensures consistent sample pressure which eliminates operator influence.
  • Coated steel mandrels resist burrs and accommodate thin-walled tubing while providing a slick surface for easy rotation.
  • Quick-change dovetail mounts replace outdated three-jaw chucks on competitive systems for secure, repeatable part positioning.
  • Wider drive belts maintain reliable part rotation during inspection.

Additionally, users can also adjust motion settings, such as rotation speed and measurement count, to suit tube diameter or inspection granularity.

Maintaining measurement accuracy also requires proper calibration of the laser micrometer. Most systems use precision calibration pins to verify diameter measurement before inspection runs. Engineers can simplify this process using our Calibration Pin Selector Tool, which helps determine appropriate pin sizes based on the tubing diameter range being measured.

Smart Software & Recipes: Minimize Setup Time

The LaserLinc Total Vu software offers:

  • Recipe management for fast setup on repeated jobs.
  • Tutorials and help tools right on the home screen.
  • Force and wall deflection zeroing tools for proper calibration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the BenchLinc system NIST traceable for quality audits? A: Yes. The BenchLinc system is calibrated using NIST-traceable calibration pins, ensuring that every measurement of ID, OD, and wall thickness meets the rigorous documentation and “Golden Tool” requirements for FDA and ISO 13485 audits.

Q: Can BenchLinc data be integrated with our existing SPC or ERP software? A: Absolutely. The system features built-in support for OPC UA communication and direct data export to CSV and Excel for easy integration into Statistical Process Control (SPC) workflows and Industry 4.0 environments.

Q: How does it handle thin-walled tubing? A: The system uses precision-coated steel mandrels and adjustable motor bands to support thin-walled parts without deformation or “ovaling” the tube during the 360° rotation.

Why the BenchLinc OD/ID/Wall Outperforms

✔️ Precision Offline-to-Inline Calibration: Directly syncs offline measurements with in-process extrusion systems for ultrasonic wall thickness and laser diameter offset because cooled tube will measure smaller than freshly extruded warm tube!

✔️ Eliminates Operator “Feel”: Unlike manual calipers where pressure varies by person, the integrated load cell ensures constant force for every measurement.
